Freeing the Heart, Awakening Insight

When our situation and experience feels threatening or chaotic , the heart naturally contracts. During times we feel safe the heart opens.  However, when we rely on external circumstances to dictate whether our heart is open or closed, we do not experience true freedom. With the cultivation of mindfulness and lovingkindness practices we can develop a truly free heart. Mindfulness practice allows us to recognize, tend and find refuge in our ever-present direct experience of body and mind, regardless of circumstances. The cultivation of loving kindness supports our capacity for an open and balanced heart, regardless of circumstances. Both practices function as protection and resource, together they support our freedom.

It is not necessary to be perfect to be free; it is only necessary to embrace our own humanity with compassion and wisdom.

It is said that cultivating Mindful Awareness is simple but not easy, and developing a capacity for loving awareness often brings up self-judgment and pain as part of a necessary purification process.  In the protected environment of retreat these budding skills and capacities can be nurtured and strengthened:  learning the forms of practice and how to work with them in relation to all the dimensions of body and mind; how to work wisely and effectively with challenges when they inevitably arise; to build confidence in our capacity to stay present with the full range of human experience; and deepening the habit of practice to integrate into our natural way of being.
